School Introduction:
National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) was originally founded in Shanghai in 1896 under the name of Nanyang College and shares the same origin as the Jiaotong universities in mainland China. In 1958, NCTU was re-established in Hsinchu City. Since then, the University had became the forerunner of science and technology in Taiwan and laid a firm foundation for the Hsinchu Science Park, the “Silicon Valley” of Taiwan. Over the years NCTU has become one of the most prominent universities in Taiwan. As a center of academic excellence of international repute, it has made significant contributions to the development of information, communication and optoelectronics sciences and technology. A consequence of this has been the huge contribution the University has made to the economic development and consequent prosperity of Taiwan. An example of this is the prominent positions many of NCTU’s alumni hold in high-tech companies, as for example, Dr Stan Shih, the founder of the Acer Group, the largest manufacturer of notebook computers in the world, and Dr F. C. Tseng, vice-chairman of TSMC, the largest semi-conduction manufacturer in the world. Over the past two years we have been crafting a 10-year blueprint that focuses on new directions the University should be moving in. These include taking a lead in integrating the fields of engineering, medicine and life sciences to effectively develop biomedical technologies, and in melding energy developments with environmental imperatives, in order to make a greater contribution to the future well-being of humanity. To achieve these things the University must of necessity grow and we are in the process of negotiating for a large tract of land in Jhubei on which to develop a new campus. As part of our continued emphasis on internationalization, NCTU pursues international collaboration with prestigious universities and research institutions world-wide. To date NCTU has entered into student exchange and joint research projects agreements with more than 80 academic institutions around the world, including Chalmers University of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). As a result, international students from more than 40 countries come to study at NCTU every year. At NCTU, we provide our students with an excellent learning and research environment, outstanding teaching and research staff, a beautiful, state-of-the-art library, and the best research facilities available. NCTU boasts one of the most picturesque campuses in Taiwan, with delightful gardens with marvelous sculptures and artworks by prominent Taiwanese artists.
