Mandarin-Advanced(II)

Class Introduction:

This course is designed for advanced learners of Mandarin, aiming to enhance their ability to process information, summarize content, and participate confidently in discussions within familiar areas. It also focuses on further developing cross-cultural communication skills. Students will expand their vocabulary and grammar knowledge, improve their speaking and writing skills, and deepen their understanding of Taiwanese and Chinese cultures. Below is a detailed course description:

Course Overview:

  1. Practical Audio-Visual Chinese, Book 3 (Lessons 11-14)
    These lessons cover advanced language topics, focusing on detailed explanations, extending discussions on familiar subjects, and integrating information. Students will further improve their ability to manage complex conversations and make well-structured contributions.

  2. Practical Audio-Visual Chinese, Book 4 (Lessons 1-5)
    In this section, students will be introduced to more sophisticated language scenarios, including analyzing and presenting opinions on various topics. The focus is on increasing vocabulary, refining grammar usage, and enhancing language precision in speaking and writing.

  3. Contemporary Taiwan (2) (Reading & Writing Focus)
    This unit provides an in-depth exploration of modern Taiwan, with an emphasis on reading and writing. Students will read advanced materials related to Taiwan's social, political, and economic context and write essays and reports that reflect a deeper understanding of these topics.

  4. TV News (3)
    In this unit, students will watch more complex TV news programs, focusing on advanced listening comprehension. They will learn to filter multiple sources of information, summarize news content, and engage in discussions about current events with accuracy and depth.

  5. Taiwanese Proverbs
    This unit introduces students to Taiwanese proverbs, enhancing their understanding of local wisdom and cultural expressions. Students will practice incorporating these proverbs into conversation and writing, improving their cultural fluency and nuanced expression in Mandarin.

  6. Practical Business Conversation (2)
    This section continues the development of business communication skills, with a focus on discussing solutions, providing detailed explanations, and confidently exchanging information in familiar professional fields. Students will participate in business negotiations, discussions, and problem-solving activities.

  7. Mini Radio Drama
    Students will create and perform mini radio dramas in this creative unit. This task helps improve oral expression, comprehension, and creativity, as students learn to script, rehearse, and present original content in Mandarin.

  8. Local Culture and Folk Customs Walking Tour (Custom Materials)
    Using custom teaching materials, students will explore Taiwan's local culture and customs through walking tours. This unit will allow students to observe and discuss cultural phenomena firsthand, fostering cross-cultural understanding and improving their ability to communicate comfortably across cultures.

Quantifiable Learning Goals:

  • Master 500 essential grammar points and 2,500 basic vocabulary words.
  • Deliver a 15-minute presentation on a specific topic, demonstrating clear and detailed explanations.
  • Write a 2,000-character report or essay on a specific topic, showing an ability to integrate and analyze information.
  • Read and comprehend written texts containing 2,200 vocabulary words, understanding both main ideas and detailed content.
