This advanced Mandarin course is designed to meet the needs of learners aiming to enhance their language proficiency in both spoken and written communication. It focuses on equipping students with the skills necessary to handle complex everyday situations, engage in deeper discussions, and improve their cross-cultural communication abilities. Below is the detailed course description:

Course Overview:

  1. Practical Audio-Visual Chinese, Book 3 (Lessons 1-10)
    This section covers advanced language scenarios, focusing on complex everyday conversations and handling unexpected situations, such as dealing with issues on public transport or discussing familiar topics related to plans. Students will accumulate more vocabulary and grammar while improving their fluency and accuracy in language use.

  2. Contemporary Taiwan (1) (Reading & Writing Focus)
    This unit introduces Taiwan’s modern society, culture, and economic development. Through reading and writing exercises, students will gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan's contemporary context and practice formal written expression, such as writing reports, reflections, and critiques.

  3. Chinese Idioms (Speaking & Writing Focus)
    This unit emphasizes the use of Chinese idioms, helping students enrich their oral expression and precision. In writing, students will learn how to incorporate idioms to enhance the quality of their essays, mastering the formal use of idiomatic expressions in various contexts.

  4. Newspaper Reading and Writing (2)
    Students will read more complex news articles, practicing the comprehension and analysis of different social issues. Writing tasks will focus on crafting commentary or critical essays, fostering students' critical thinking and formal writing skills for real-world applications.

  5. TV News (2)
    By watching TV news programs, students will improve their listening comprehension and oral expression, learning how to capture key points in fast-paced media contexts. This section strengthens students' ability to respond to real-world scenarios in modern Mandarin.

  6. Practical Business Conversation (1)
    This unit provides practice in common business conversation scenarios, where students will learn how to handle negotiations, offer suggestions, and express opinions in meetings. It is designed for students aiming to enter the business world and equips them with the necessary language skills for professional communication.

  7. Local Culture and Folk Customs Walking Tour (Custom Materials)
    Using custom teaching materials, the instructor will lead students on walking tours to explore Taiwan’s local culture and customs. Students will observe and discuss various cultural phenomena firsthand, developing a deeper understanding of Taiwanese culture and enhancing their cross-cultural communication skills.

Quantifiable Learning Goals:

  • Master 300 essential grammar points and 1,500 vocabulary words.
  • Deliver a three-minute impromptu speech, clearly expressing their thoughts on a given topic.
  • Participate in a debate or discussion for more than three minutes on a specific meeting topic.
  • Read and comprehend written texts containing 1,800 vocabulary words, understanding both main ideas and details.
  • Write an 800-character narrative, expressive, expository, or practical essay, demonstrating command of complex topics.
