Beauty of Museums
Taiwan has beautiful nature and profound culture. Multifarious, comprehensive museums are located around Taiwan. Their exhibitions include Chinese and Taiwanese relics, special local industries, natural science, arts and humanities and folk culture. The themes of collections in museums are diverse. Numerous museums are also monuments. It is evident that Taiwan spares no effort in cultural reservation and heritage.

National Palace Museum
No.221, Sec. 2, Zhishan Rd., Shilin Dist., Taipei City
The museum was founded in 1925 and completed in Taipei in 1965.
It is the largest museum in Taiwan and has up to five million visitors in 2019.
The museum has plentiful collections, especially Chinese calligraphy and painting. Therefore, it is also an important research institute for Chinese studies and art history.
The period of collection starts from the Neolithic Age and extends over 8000 years.
Comprehensive collections are available, including painting, calligraphy, bronze ware, ceramics and jade ware, unfolding the beauty of Chinese arts and culture. -
National Museum of History
No. 49, Nanhai Rd., Zhongzheng Dist., Taipei City
Founded in 1955, this is the first public museum since the Republic of China retreated to Taiwan.
It is close to Taipei Botanical Garden. The red wall and green tiles display a traditional, elegant style.
The museum collects up to fifty thousand diverse relics, including ancient painted pottery, Oracle bone and bronze from Shang and Zhou Dynasties, and Sancai. It has multifarious collections. -
National Taiwan Museum
No. 2, Xiangyang Rd., Zhongzheng Dist., Taipei City
Founded in 1908, it was formerly the Taiwan Governor Museum during Taiwan’s period of Japanese rule. It is the oldest museum in Taiwan.
The museum has two permanent exhibitions, “Section on Taiwan's creature” and “Section on Taiwan's indigenous culture”.
Besides the main hall in the 228 Peace Memorial Park, the Ancient Creature Hall, the South Gate Hall, focusing on Taiwanese industries such as camphor, and the North Gate Hall, focusing on the railway. -
Taipei Astronomical Museum
No. 363, Jihe Rd., Shilin Dist., Taipei City
Founded in 1996, it is a modern astronomical education building with recreational, entertainment and educational functions.
The museum has diverse instrument and facilities for visitors to learn astronomical knowledge while appreciating the beauty of the universe. -
Taipei Fine Arts Museum
No.181, Sec. 3, Zhongshan N. Rd., Zhongshan Dist., Taipei City
The museum was founded in 1983. Besides permanent exhibitions on modern and contemporary arts and occasional exhibitions, it also holds publication exhibitions and annual international exhibitions.
The museum focuses on the works of Taiwanese artists in 20th century and owns about 5,000 collections.
This museum actively promotes Taiwanese modern and contemporary arts and makes an all-out effort in fostering and developing Taiwanese arts. -
MOCA Taipei
No.39 Chang-An West Road Taipe
The museum was founded in 2001. The building is a monument built in 1921 during Taiwan’s period of Japanese rule.
It is located in the antique Dadaocheng and near Taipei Confucius Temple and Dalongdong Baoan Temple.
All kinds of exhibitions with the themes of contemporary arts are available. They are excellent and internationally renowned. -
Beitou Hot Spring Museum
No. 2, Zhongshan Rd., Beitou Dist., Taipei City
Founded in 1998, the museum is a level-three monument, formerly the Hokuto Public Bathhouse built in 1913 during Taiwan’s period of Japanese rule.
As the largest hot spring bathhouse in East Asia back then, the museum has preserved abundant hot spring relics.
The landscape around the museum is wonderful. The permanent exhibition on hot spring culture and Beitou industry are vintage and charming. -
Ketagalan Culture Center
No. 3-1, Chungshan Road, Peitou, Taipei City
The museum was founded in 2002. The well-proportioned slate material on the wall of the building, splendid weaving pattern, stone-carved painting and wood sculpture all look glamorous.
In addition to precious relics of indigenous culture and arts, the museum held the exhibition on the works of indigenous artists.
The public space is used for performance, activity, gathering and used as the skill training center.
The museum displays the abundant vitality of diverse ethnic groups and colorful culture in Taiwan. -
New Taipei City Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology
No.200, Museum Rd., Bali Dist., New Taipei City
The museum, founded in 2003, is the first municipal archaeological museum in Taiwan.
It is located next to the ruins of Shihsanhang Culture, the Pre-Iron Age during the prehistory of Taiwan.
The museum displays the ruins and background information during the prehistory of Taiwan, including Shihsanhang Culture and Yuanshan Culture.
It occasionally holds educational activities such as relics preservation. -
Yingge Ceramics Museum
No.200, Wenhua Rd., Yingge Dist., New Taipei City
Founded in 2000, this is the first professional ceramic museum in Taiwan.
The exhibition is divided into five themes, the traditional Taiwanese pottery, the history of Taiwanese ceramics, ancient and indigenous ceramic culture, and future ceramics industry and advanced ceramics.
In addition to the survey on the literature and history of Taiwanese ceramics, and collection, preservation and maintenance of relics, the museum inspires the public to become interested in ceramics and promotes ceramic industry through exhibition and seminar. -
Gold Museum ,New Taipei City Government
No.8, Jinguang Rd., Ruifang Dist., New Taipei City
The museum, founded in 2004, is the first ecological museum park in Taiwan.
Located in the mountain town at Jinguashi, it was formerly the largest gold mining area in Asia.
The exhibition is divided into three sections, the exhibition on the history and relics of gold mining in Jiufen and Jinguashi, the exploration of the value of gold from the view of history, culture, arts and science, and the outdoor gold mining activities. -
Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum
No. 88, Guangsheng Xincheng, Guangsheng Village, Sanyi Township, Miaoli County
Founded in 1995, it is the only public museum for wood sculpture.
The museum collects, preserves and displays wood sculptures, and carries out research, promotion, heritage and innovation of wood sculpture.
The themes are quite diverse, including the origin of sculptural art, folk wood sculpture, composite media, and contemporary artworks, fully express the beauty of the everlasting arts of wood sculpture. -
National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts
No. 2, Sec. 1, Wu Chuang W. Rd., West District, Taichung
Founded in 1988, it is the only national museum in Taiwan.
The museum is centered on Taiwanese arts. It collects Taiwanese artworks of all ages and it is an important research institute of art history.
The museum collects artworks, holds exhibitions, promotes arts and carries out research. It takes care of international, educational and artistic aspects. -
National Museum of Natural Science
No.1, Guanqian Rd., North Dist., Taichung City
The museum was founded in 1986. It is the first national science museum.
The museum consists of the Science Center, Space Theater, Life Science Hall, the Hall of Human Cultures, the Hall of Global Environment and Botanical Garden.
This museum has the second highest number of visitors per year, next only to National Palace Museum.
Three park areas outside the museum area available, 921 Earthquake Education Park in Wufeng District, Taichung, Fonghuanggu Bird & Ecology Park in Lugu Village, Nantou County, and Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park in Zhushan Township, Nantou County.
The museum is in charge of seven museums of natural history in Taiwan. -
Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum
No. 888, Gugong Blvd., Taibao City, Chiayi County
Founded in 2015, this is the southern branch of the National Palace Museum, oriented toward collection, research, education and display of Asian works of arts and relics.
The primary collections are all kinds of Asian art relics. Five permanent exhibitions are held, Through the Annals of Time: A Brief History of Chiayi, Imprints of Buddhas: Buddhist Art in the National Palace Museum Collection, The Far-Reaching Fragrance of Tea: The Art and Culture of Tea in Asia, Boldness of Forums and Colors: Asian Textiles in the National Palace Museum Collection, and Understanding Asian Art: Multimedia Gallery Guide.
The mission of the museum is to bridge the gap of cultural resource between Northern and Southern Taiwan and develop the cultural heritage in both of Northern and Southern Taiwan.
It is planned to build a hall for display of restored national treasure and relics to develop and establish the professional technique and industry of relics preservation and restoration. -
National Museum of Taiwan Literature
No.1, Zhongzheng Rd., West Central District, Tainan City
Founded in 2003, it is the first national literature museum in Taiwan. The museum primarily collects, organizes, preserves and studies the historical materials of early modern Taiwanese literature.
The museum actively studies on the historical materials of Taiwanese literature, collects writers’ relics, publishes the works of Taiwanese writers, and plans for and implements extension education.
The museum often organizes literature exhibitions with different themes, and invites scholars and writers to deliver a speech. It is an important institute for research and promotion f Taiwanese literature. -
National Museum of Taiwan History
No.250, Sec 1, Changhe Rd., Annan District, Tainan City
The museum, founded in 2007, primarily promotes Taiwanese history and collects Taiwanese relics, expressing significance in aborinigality and education.
Seven permanent exhibitions are available, including Taiwanese geography, early residents, regional society and diverse culture, and democratic society.
The museum often holds special exhibitions associated with themes of Taiwan, such as religion, women’s rights, food and sports. These exhibitions are profound and educational. -
Chimei Museum
No. 66, Sec. 2, Wenhua Rd., Rende Dist., Tainan City
Founded in 1992, this is a privately-owned museum, art gallery with the largest collection in Taiwan.
The collections are primarily Western oil painting and sculpture, especially French painting and sculpture in the 19th century.
The museum has a large collection of weapon, musical instrument, ancient relics and specimen.
Famous violins are borrowed to famous performers for more people to enjoy the musical instrument. -
National Science and Technology Museum
No. 720, Jiouru 1st Road, Kaohsiung
The museum, founded in 1997, is the first museum of applied science in Taiwan and the first national social education institute in Southern Taiwan.
As an important city for heavy industry, this museum displays the principle of technology and applied science based on local characteristics and according to its geographical location.
The museum collects and studies technological materials, displays and holds technological exhibitions and events, and promotes scientific and technological education. -
National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium
No. 2, Houwan Road, Checheng Village, Pingtung
The museum, founded in 2000, is located in Kenting National Park. It is a large museum of marine life.
It has a life coral display, a 81-meter long underwater tunnel, Waters of Taiwan, Algae Forest Tank, and the electronic ecological tank, the first of its kind.
This type of tank displays the VR version of ancient ocean, deep sea and Antarctic sea.
It is an important institute for extension education and academic research. -
National Center for Traditional Arts
No. 201, Wubin Road Section 2, Wujie Township, Yi-Lan County
The center, founded in 2002, is a large park with beauty of Taiwanese traditional arts and culture.
The park is divided into the section for studying and teaching traditional arts, the section for performing traditional Chinese drama, the section for experiencing the traditional building, and the section for promoting the traditional craft.
A landscape experience section integrating a large performing venue for traditional Chinese acrobatics or Chinese folk sports with a folk botanical garden.
The exhibition combines the beauty of dynamics and statics. The center holds various dynamic acrobatics performances regularly. Relics of traditional arts, crafts, music and drama are available in the Exhibition Hall. -
National Museum of Prehistory
No.1 Museum Rd., Taitung City, Taitung County
The museum was founded in 1990. It is one of the main public museums of anthropology and natural history in Taiwan, and the only national museum in Eastern Taiwan.
The museum focuses on collection, research and education of relics of Taiwan prehistory and Taiwanese indigenous culture.
It is located in the Beinan Ruins. Besides extension education activities, the museum is one of the important research institutes for Beinan Culture and Austronesian peoples. -
Hualien County Stone Sculptural Museum
No.6, Wenfu Rd., Hualien City, Hualien County
The museum, founded in 2001, is the first stone sculptural museum in Taiwan.
It is devoted to promoting the culture of stone sculpture, including the collection, research, education and display of the culture of stone sculpture in Taiwan and around the world.
The museum carries out the extension education and academic research of the arts and craft culture of stone sculpture through exhibition and theme activity.
