IV. Event description:

Taipei is a capital of glamor and glory, and a historical city. Each town in the city has its own charm. Tamkang University designed practical, cultural courses with various themes for these towns, combining tourism with local specialties. While learning Mandarin, foreign students can experience diverse, rich local specialties of Taipei, including the combination of tradition and fashion, small town, mountain village, and important, vintage cities with hundred-years of history in trading.

IV. Event description:

A Taiwanese saying goes, “Fucheng, Lugang and Manka”, describing the order of early development in Taiwan and important regions back then. National Changhua University of Education designed a series of courses integrating local culture and food for foreign students based on Lukang. Foreign students will visit local tourism spots, take well-designed Mandarin courses, and experience the special culture during study. The wonder of Taiwan and Changhua are unfolded before the eyes of the foreigners.

IV. Event description:

Kaohsiung has beautiful views of mountain and ocean, and an unique, diverse culture. National Sun Yat-sen University focuses on five iconic cultures when designing the courses of Mandarin On-the Go in Taiwan, the culture of Kaohsiung as a harbor city, the marine culture, the culture of temple and Hakka, the culture of Chinese food, and the culture of rural area. Foreign students can experience the culture on the spot during learning. The Mandarin courses combine local features with customs. The students can enjoy the tour and having fun learning Mandarin.

IV. Event description:

Hualien was chosen as the location for Mandarin On-the Go in Taiwan in Eastern Taiwan. Multifarious, rich cultural experiences and Mandarin courses were provided for foreign students. The culture of Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples, jade culture, Hakka culture, tourism of culture and creativity, Chinese food, and fun in rural areas, are integrated with the well-designed Mandarin courses. Besides learning practical Mandarin, foreign students can also experience the unique culture and local customs of Taiwan and Hualien.

III. Event description:

The courses in previous year were widely praised. This year the courses also focus on Mazu, a special Taiwanese culture, combining tourism and cultural experience, and Mandarin learning. Four core themes were arranged for Mandarin education, the mortal life and legend of Mazu, the local scenic spots during the pilgrimage, the local religious ritual in Taiwan, and the Taiwanese temple integrating historical heritage and local specialties.

III. Event description:

The MOEA, the organizer of the event, and all co-organizers prepared a series of splendid educational, cultural activities during the Lantern Festival, including pipa performance, Taiwanese folk performance and martial arts performance. They held multivariate events for foreign students, including the lantern riddles, Chinese songs for foreign students, and folk song performance. During this event, foreign students can practice and use Mandarin more often, experience the distinctive Taiwanese culture and festival customs.

[Event 1] 2016 Opening ceremony of Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage – Student performance

III. Event description:

Feng Chia University was invited to the opening ceremony of Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage, a famous Mazu temple in Taiwan. It is a rare opportunity for foreign students learning Mandarin in Feng Chia University to dress in their traditional clothes and hold their national flag when marching into the venue. Foreign students put on a play in their mother language and Chinese, adding an international flair to this large, traditional, cultural Taiwanese festival.

III. Event description:

A cultural tour was held in Yonghe Temple, Dadu District, Taichung for foreign students learning Mandarin in Feng Chia University. They have a chance to crawl under the palanquin, a rare cultural experience. A series of Mandarin culture courses were arranged and divided into six sections, the story of Mazu, temple, religious ritual, scenic areas along the pilgrimage route, daily life Mandarin, and daily life Minnan. The foreign students can experience the diverse, free religious and ethnic characteristics in Taiwan when learning Mandarin.

III. Event description:

Longtan Township in Taoyuan is a significant location for Hakka culture in Taiwan. National Central University planned for a series of courses of Mandarin On-the Go in Taiwan for foreign students learning Mandarin in Taiwan. Foreign students can experience the fascinating Hakka culture in Taiwan while learning Mandarin. This event was held during the Hakka Tung Blossom Festival. Tung flowers bloomed and fell like the snow in May. In such a beautiful season, these students can participate in Hakka cultural activities, such as making Hakka leicha and oil-paper umbrella, and tasting Hakka food.

III. Event description:

Dragon Boat Festival is a significant festival in Chinese culture. Shih Chien University used this this chance to lead foreign students learning Mandarin in Taiwan to experience Taiwanese culture when learning Mandarin. The most special part of this event is that foreign students can experience the unique dragon boat culture in the traditional Chinese culture. Four types of language and cultural experience courses are available, wrapping rice dumplings, making fragrant sachets, the story of Dragon Boat Festival, and traditional Chinese toys. They combine Mandarin education and diverse cultural experience to add joy to Mandarin course and education.

[Event 1] 2016 Hualien County Joint Indigenous Harvest Festival Masling Music Dance Night

III. Event description:

This event is held according to the schedule of the “Hualien County Joint Indigenous Harvest Festival”, organized by the Hualien County Government. This event includes scavenger hunt and dancing with thousands of people. Foreign students learning Mandarin in Taiwan can experience and find out the unique indigenous culture in Taiwan, and enjoy the diverse, free vibe of Taiwanese ethnic groups.

Foreign students can admire the beauty of culture in diverse ways.

III. Event description:

The Mid-Autumn Festival is an important festival in Chinese culture. Sun Yat-sen University planned a series of tours and courses during the Mid-Autumn Festival for foreign students to experience the culture of Mid-Autumn Festival in Taiwan. The course is well-designed. Abundant, diverse physical and quiet activities are included in each section. Besides learning the history, origin, food and customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival, foreign students can also admire the moon and learn about the idea that this is a festival for people to get together and admire the moon. A guide will be provided for foreign students to visit the moon world, a special landform in Kaohsiung, Hamasen Railway Cultural Park and Port of Kaohsiung, and enjoy the local view.

III. Event description:

The Ghost Festival has a profound culture. In addition to traditional customs and rituals, the cultural idea of the festival is quite significant. Fo Guang University planned a series of Mandarin culture courses during the festival. It introduced the culture of Ghost Month in Taiwan centered on the Ghost Festival, such as customs and taboos. It organized the water lantern event and introduced the meaning of the event, such as respecting the Heaven, worshiping the spirits, and praying for the well-being of all living beings with benevolence. Through this course integrating with cultural experiences, foreign students who came all the way to learn Mandarin in Taiwan can enjoy learning Mandarin, and experience the charming local culture and customs of Taiwan deeply.
